Professor Shannon Kenney receives prestigious Henle Award, recognizing impactful contributions to research on Epstein-Barr virus.
The McArdle Laboratory congratulates Professor Shannon Kenney on her selection to receive the 2022 Henle Award from the International Association for Research on Epstein-Barr Virus and Associated Diseases.
The Henle Award recognizes Dr. Kenney’s consistent, impactful, and world-renowned contributions to our understanding of how Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) replicates and causes human cancers including a subset of Burkitt’s and Hodgkin’s lymphomas and also gastric and nasopharyngeal carcinomas.
Dr. Kenney’s research has focused on understanding the complex gene regulation that underpins EBV lytic reactivation as well as how the host immune system responds to EBV-infected cells. Both research trajectories provide key insights to the field relevant to the development of new EBV-targeted anticancer therapies.
The Henle Award honors the memory of Werner and Gertrude Henle, two founding members of the EBV research community. Previous winners include McArdle’s own Professor Bill Sugden and Nobel Prize winner Harald zur Hausen.
Dr. Kenney will be honored during the 20th International Symposium on EBV and Associated Diseases held this summer in Siena, Italy.
